— Desiderius Erasmus
Desiderius Erasmus b. 15th century BC - Rotterdam, Netherlands
Though born in Rotterdam, Erasmus spent only the first four years of his life there. He was educated in a series of monastic and semi-monastic schools, where he learned Greek and the importance of a personal relationship with God. While he was ordained as a priest, Erasmus did not work as a cleric, and instead traveled to Paris to become a scholar. It was in Paris that he was introduced to Renaissance humanism, and his thinking on Reformation brought on a temperance of radical Christian theology. Erasmus travelled throughout northern Europe, teaching and collaborating with brilliant thinkers, and spreading humanist thought and Classical knowledge until his death from dysentery in 1536.
