Mawlana Jalal ud-Din Muhammad Rumi b. 13th century AD - village of Waqsh, Balkh city of Persia
Jalal ud-Din Rumi was born in 1207 in the small village of Waqsh, present-day Tajikistan. Rumi descended from a long line of Islamic jurists, theologians, and mystics. When Rumi was still a young man, his family moved west to avoid the invasion of Genghis Khan’s armies and settled in present-day Turkey, where Rumi lived and wrote most of his life. He was introduced into the mystical path by a wandering dervish, Shams ud-Din of Tabriz, who became his close friend and had significant impact on his work. The absolute love of God is at the core of Rumi’s poetry. During his lifetime he produced a prolific range of inspiring and devotional works which encapsulate Sufi principles of being.
