Ibn Ata’Illah al-Iskandari belonged to a renowned and scholarly family from the Banu Judham tribe, originally from Arabia. Ibn Ata’Illah received a traditional Islamic education under some of the best and most illustrious teachers of Alexandria. The third sheikh of the Shadhili Sufi order, he was responsible for systematizing the order's doctrines and recording the biographies of its founder, Sidi Abu-l-Hassan ash-Shadhili. Ibn Ata'illah taught both at the al-Azhar Mosque and the Mansuriyyah Madrasah in Cairo and his virtue, majestic presence, eloquence, and spiritual insights led him to have many followers. He authored Miftah al-Falah, The Key to Salvation: A Sufi Manual of Invocation and a compilation of hikam or aphorisms, both of which have left a lasting spiritual legacy.
