Wonder is the beginning of wisdom.
Socrates b. 5th century BC - Athens, Greece
Socrates was the son of Sophroniscus, an Athenian stone-mason and sculptor, and Phaenarete, a midwife. Much about Socrates is known through the writings of his students Plato and Xenophon. Through his portrayal in Plato's dialogues, Socrates has become renowned for his contribution to the field of ethics. Socrates believed that philosophy should achieve practical results for the greater well-being of society. He attempted to establish an ethical system based on human reason rather than theological doctrines. He pointed out that human choice was motivated by the desire for happiness where ultimate wisdom comes from knowing oneself.
